I used to watch Gimme a Break when I was home on friday nights with my sister or a babysitter. I liked how Nell Carter reminded me of Mrs. Voss, my elementary school music teacher. They were about the same size and exuded the same, "take no shit" attitude. Plus, they sang like little short divas on fire. Mrs. Voss cracked the whip, made us do ridiculous choreography and wear stupid costumes, and in general made music class miserable. But I remember spotting her, teary-eyed in the crowd, during my last high school recital. She must have been friends with my glee club director and had come to see her former students in our final performance. Whenever I saw Nell Carter on TV, I immdediately associated her with Mrs. Voss.
