2002-12-02 - 3:04 p.m.

On the plane yesterday, I noticed something a little odd. It was a 7 pm flight, the last of the day, and it showed on the faces of the crew. One flight attendant, wearing the sample life vest, propped herself up in the doorway as another announced the safety instructions, barely audible over the roar of the ventialtion system. The one in the life vest became animated as the other explained how to use the vest, but her actions were barely in synch with what we heard. I noticed this only when I looked up briefly from what I was reading, and as I looked around, I realized that people were barely, if at all, paying attention to her. They were talking, or reading, or sleeping.

We worry about so many other dangers while flying these days, we barely pay attention to the basic ones, and I think in the back of everyone's mind, we know that there's no possibility that we'll actually have the chance to use the life vest if it came to that.
