The Fenway T station is under the Park St Bridge. The underside of the bridge is a cris-crossing of steel beams, on which pigeons roosted to keep warm in the winter, or to hide in the cool shade in the summer. Occasionally, they shit on the unsuspecting T passengers below who were waiting for the train. For that reason, I assume, the MBTA installed pigeon-proof spikes on the rafters that are directly above the trains and waiting areas at the station.

And it is perhaps because of these thin steel needles that a pigeon was roosting on the tracks instead of the rafters. Or maybe it tried to land on the spikes, and fell. However it ended up on the tracks, it must not have gotten out of the way in time when a train arrived, because as I waited for the train a few nights ago, I glanced down to see the unmistakable remains of a run-over pigeon, squashed against the far rail.

I wished I had my camera with me.
